Clarity of Reporting ELA Full Write Condition Codes vs. Zeros

When educators choose “Writing Trait Scores” from the “Select a results view” for a group of students, they see a table with a column labeled “0” for all three writing traits. This column combines zeroes that result from condition codes on the ELA full write with zeroes that result from an earned score of 0 on the rubric for Conventions. This leads to misinterpretations of the information reported and potential misapplication of the data onto student instruction. Further, with the new process of scoring Conventions for student responses that get a condition code of Off Purpose, this combination is even more tricky for users to understand and the presentation in SRS does not provide support for an understanding.

We are requesting an enhancement that clarifies the difference between a 0 that is a result of a condition code and one that is the result of an earned 0 on the Conventions rubric. Although the biggest need is to disentangle the 0s that are reported for Conventions, there is also a need to clarify for users what a reported 0 means for Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose. Those 0s do not mean that the student has demonstrated little or no understanding of those skills; rather, the student’s response did not give us information to make a value determination on their work. In short, those 0s actually mean “we don’t know” for those students.

The enhancement might include separating the Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose from Conventions and labeling the 0 for Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose as “Condition Code (0)” Then in a separate table, Conventions would be reported with four columns instead of the current three. Those 4 columns would be: “Condition Code (0)” to match the information in the Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose table and convey the same information; then a column labeled “0” for those responses that did earn a 0 according to the rubric; and then columns for “1” and “2.” This proppsal is shown visually in the attached PowerPoint file, "SRS Condition Codes." This proposal is not the only way this could be accomplished, so the enhancement request is really about two things: A) clarifying the difference between a 0 that is a result of a condition code and one that is the result of an earned 0 (as those two mean very different things); B) and making it clear that a 0 on the Evidence/Elaboration and Organization/Purpose rubrics always mean that a condition code has been assigned.
